“Susan, if you can spend the night with us, ‘Black Girls Gone Wild,’ you have to be one of the girls,” Wanda said.
“Yeah, Susan,” I said. “After tonight, you and I both will be full-fledged office girls.”
“Who’s next?” Alicia said.
“Who are you, Alicia, the story police?” Wanda said.
“Yes, I am! It’s your turn next, Ms. Facilitator!”
“Oh, y’all think y’all ready for me? I’m just gon’ come on out and tell you, you ain’t ready!” Wanda said.
“We’ll see, start talking,” Alicia said.
“Gimme a minute, half-pint.”
Wanda’s Story
I was born and raised on the South Side of Chicago, Illinois. I have six brothers and two sisters. Both of my parents are still living, and still living together. We grew up close in my family. My sisters and brothers were my best friends. We had friends outside of us, but when we hung out, the brothers of the family hung out with the brothers, and the sisters of the family hung out with the sisters. Sometimes we even hung out together.
I graduated from high school, but I didn’t go to college. I got married young. And when I tell you I loved that man, I loved the hell out of that man. But we were young and stupid. Well, he was young and stupid, anyway. He couldn’t take care of his family. Well, he could have, he didn’t want to. He cheated on me so many times I stopped counting. But I was so in love with him, I couldn’t let him go. But when he started having kids with other women, I had to cut it off. He had about three kids outside our marriage, but the bastard couldn’t manage one inside our damn marriage.
It took me a while to get over him. We broke up a few more times before I could get that niggah outta my system. Actually, I came down here to Atlanta to visit my cousins, and we were hanging out on Old National Highway. I met this black, country-ass niggah, and we kept in touch when I went back to Chicago. I talked about his Jethro ass the night I met him, but when I got back to Chicago and he started talkin’ that country shit to me, I had to uproot and come back down here permanently.
He’s a mama’s boy, but that’s a good thang. He’ll do anything for his mama, but he’ll also do anything for me and my girls. We go at it now, we ain’t perfect, but we know how far to go, and we know when to back up.
I started working at Upskon not too long after I moved down here, and been here ever since. I think I like working there so much because it’s all women, and we don’t have to put up with that macho-man bullshit.
People say I got a big mouth, and a bad attitude, and I like to talk shit. That ain’t it, I don’t like to talk shit, I like to bullshit. I like to start fun, not trouble.
